undo keyboard programming in win XP- how do I get back the default keyboard? Best answer on the web
Author: webmaster // Category: xn--g7qx97f.comRemoving keyboard software does not help; besides the keyboard manufacturer (Memorex MX3300) insists that their software only programs special internet keys on the keyboard not numeric keypad. I tried to update/change keyboard driver(Windows XP)but have not succeeded.
To the best of my knowledge, Windows XP does not provide any facilities for the keyboard customizations you described. It is, therefore, more likely that you used a third party utility to make these customizations. In this case, there are a couple of options you have to get your old keyboard settings back: - Try to find which utility you used to make this change
You should be able to find it in your Start Menu (Under "All Programs"), or listed in the Uninstall programs list(Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs). You should be able to get back your original settings either by making the relevant changes using the utility, or by uninstalling the utility.
- Prevent the utility from loading at Windows startup.
You can check if such a utility is loading at Windows startup, and disable it to get back your default keyboard settings. You can get a list of programs that load at startup, by using the MSConfig utility: Click Start Menu>Run, type msconfig , and press enter.
The Startup tab lists programs that are loaded by default. You can stop these from loading by unchecking the checkbox next to their name. The Services tab displays services that are started at startup. Check the "Hide all Microsoft Services" checkbox. See if you can identify the utility in the Startup and/or Services tab, and uncheck the checkbox next to it. Reboot to see if your problem is solved.
If you need any clarifications, just ask!
Hope this helps.

There might be a possibility for you to revert to your old system settings, by using Windows XP's System Restore (START > "Help and Support" > "Pick a task" > "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore" > "Restore my computer to an earlier time" > "Next" > Here choose the lastest date on which your system was fully working(Before the reporgramming of your system keys)
This will of course only work, if you have system restore enabled, for the drive on which the changes was made.
Hope this can get your old system back.

Could you please tell me exactly which number keys are doing what? It may help in figuring out what's wrong.
Thanks.
I believe that you may have MouseKeys turned on. MouseKeys is a feature in Windows XP that enables you to use the numeric keypad to perform mouse functions such as selecting text, clicking, double-clicking, dragging, etc. There is a fairly easy way to turn this feature off so that your numeric keypad will return to normal.
Please go to your Start menu. Click "Control Panel".
Click "Accessibility Options".
A small window will appear. At the top of this window, you'll find a tab that reads . This is used to setup accessibility options for mouse functions. Please click this tab.
You'll see the following text:
"MouseKeys
Use Mousekeys if you want to control the pointer with the numeric kepad on your keyboard."
Just below this text, you'll see a checkbox that reads:
Use Mousekeys
Try clicking within the small box to de-select this option.
Further information is available on Microsoft's Website at:

This is only one of many possible fixes for the problem you describe. I'm offering it as it seems the most likely. If this does not solve you problem, please just reject this answer.

I accidently reprogrammed some of the numeric keypad keys to select, go to line start, etc. I don't remember how I did this- and don't really care at this point. How can I get back the default keyboard mapping?

Then you clarified:
It is little hard to tell the difference between them, they all seem to select text when the mouse is in a text window, for example: Numeric keypad "3" acts like "select paragraph" same as triple clicking the mouse Numeric keypad "2" and "1" acts like "select word" same as double clicking the mouse or select to end
When the mouse is on a window bar, both "3" and "2" seem to toggle the maximize/restore down window size, can't tell what "1" does "3" may also toggle between application windows if window is already maximum.
As far as I can tell, when numlock is off keys 1,2,3 behave properly as end, down and PgDn. Hope this helps.

Try this and see if it helps: Click the Start Menu > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options.
A new window will open. Click the "Languages" tab. Now click "Details...".
Another window will now be open. In the white box, you should see the word "Keyboard" beside a small image of a keyboard. Directly below it, "US" should be selected. If there is any other country selected, that is probably your problem.
But if that appears to be all normal, what you should do is try another keyboard. If the problem persists on a completely different keyboard, you know it's a computer problem as opposed to a keyboard problem.
