Updating template fails

January 6th, 2009
  • I have Office XP. After creating a document, it was decided to change some of the styles. I change the Normal.Dot default style, then followed the instruction in the help to get the original document to accept the new styles, but it does not work. Interestingly, anything enter into the original document at the end of the document does appear in the new style. Tried everything I could think of. Any help out there?

  • Changing normal.dot is NOT the way to change a style in a single document. Normal.dot is the default template for ALL styles.

Generally, you can update/modify any style by right-clicking it in the styles task pane and choose modify.

    Another, faster way:

Apply the style to a paragraph.
Change the formatting OF THAT PARAGRAPH to desired new format.
Right-click the original style name (not the new one!), and choose Update to Match Selection.

    ;)

  • I want to change the Normal.DOT so this document, existing documents, and all further documents will use the new style.

  • Then you need to open your doc(s), hit Tools-Templates and addins, and choose "automatically update template styles".

    :)

  • That is what the Help file said, so it was the first thing I tried. Did not work for the text that already existed in the document. Only works for any new text you add.

  • I find that if I want to change any template I right click and choose open on the template as opposed to opening the normal way - this way actually opens the template and the changes are then saved in to the original

not sure if this will work with the normal template, but no reason not to

  • Can I have a look at a sample document? anne@vbaexpress.com
