Equipment question ORD ANC

January 5th, 2009
  • Going BDL -ORD - ANC next week (ah,the glamour of travel.....).

According to the booking, I'm on a 737-800 on the way up and a 737-900 on the way back on the ORD - ANC legs.

When I checked on Seatgru they do not show any power ports in the the coach seats. I have 6C up, 7D back. Anyone have any insights?

I've already lost all hope of any upgrades.

  • ANC-ORD (or the reverse) really stretch the limits of the -900. Under many circumstances, this flight can't go full on this leg. If you like bumps, be sure to volunteer early. If you hate bumps, check in early. It's always good advice to bring medicine etc in your carry-on bag, and I certainly would on this flight. None of this applies when operated by an -800.

Biggest insight is that AS does not have power ports on any of it's planes, so that won't impact seat assignment. 6C is good on that 800, a bit more leg room, and there is underseat storage, as there is no bulkhead between first and coach. 7D is just a standard seat that happens to be near the front of the plane.

I recall reading some time ago that the newer AS 737-800s would be delivered with powerports (maybe only in F). Did this plan change at some point? A lot of people on here complain about row 6 on the 738, but at least you can stick your legs into F. :D Otherwise, the exit rows are the only seats with extra legroom.

  • I would truly enjoy the availability of powerports on more aircraft. I flew UA SFO-KOA earlier this year and after checking on Flight Guru they had a note that UA was currently removing powerports from the 767 aircraft in the fleet.

Powerports would be another perk that I would imagine (especially on the delivery of new aircraft) could be accomodated with little cost and great benefit.

AFAIK, no AS planes have powerports. At least none of the 100 or so I've been on so far this year have had them.

  • This is one of the things I cannot figure out. When I flipped from AA to AS, I simply bought a battery for my laptop that goes into where the CD/DVD drive goes. I can go for about 4-5 hours now, long enough for any AS flight I have been on.

  • No powerports on any of our aircraft currently or that I am aware of in the future. I have brought it up numerous times as a nice feature especially on our longer segments.

  • Thanks for the great info on the powerports.

I have made the move from looking for good movies to getting Lunesta.
Which leads me to my next question. Since I'm not gonna get an upgrade,
is there going to be pillows or blankets? On AA redeyes they have been better about every person getting a blanket, but of course pillows are history.

A wise decision for that long flight!

Pillows and blankets are stocked plentifully, but there isn't necessarily one for everyone.

I would imagine that's why the 739 is only used on the eastbound leg; it can catch the tailwinds to help with the range. No way could it make it with a good payload going west; hence the 738 going the other way.

Fooko, we all dream of having powerports for our laptops & cell phones. The bottom line is AS does not want to add any more weight to their fleet. Just last week they announced cost-savings going to a lighter cart. There is little chance we'll see this in the future. It's all about weight.
