OT: Bell Sympatico

January 5th, 2009
  • Sorry this is really off topic but I need some help. Please delete if necessary

I am having problems with my Bell Sympatico being really slow. Bell is saying it is normal and I shouldn't complain.

If anyone is using syampatico "High Speed" could you go to speedtest.net and let me know what your download speed is.

My internet is painfully slow. I am getting in the mid 500's and I believe I should be getting around 2500kb/s

    Thanks

    What modem do you have?

Are you sure you have "High Speed" and not "Basic"?

How far are you from a Bell CO?

  • I don't know where you were calling, but most Bell Sympatico customer service agents are set up to be overly 'customer service friendly' - It's kind of annoying when they tell you that you will receive a customer satisfaction survey after every telephone call

From what you wrote, it sounds like your call was outsourced. Trying making your call from 9-5 ET to get someone in Canada. Also they definitely should allow you to talk to a supervisor.

I've had speed issues now and again and it has never been any of my systems - always the Bell network or some administration issue on the account (e.g. your account gets mistakenly downgraded from High Speed).

  • I've never checked my speed before and I registered 9220kb/sec down and 960 up. If you were getting the mid 500's... yikes!!

  • I did ask for the money back they flat out said no. But they did say they would give me 3 months free if I stayed with them on High-Speed LOL.

I am first going to send them a registered letter stating my claim before taking them to small claims. They may respond better that way.

  • I talked to them Monday night. They said that there did seem to be a problem with my line. They would look into it within 24 hours. I was getting 700kbps.

I got home yesterday and was getting 500kbps. I called CS and they told me that they looked into the problem and that it was fixed LOL. We did some more playing around with my setting delete stuff changing bootup process all sorts of garbage that I know wouldn't work but I went along for the ride. So the CS person gets to the last page of their manual and with no other option left has the balls to tell me that my speed is within their acceptable tolerance levels. I confirmed with her that I was in fact a "High Speed" customer and not a lite. She also confirmed when I asked her that I was in fact getting below what a "normal" lite speed connection gets. I tried to escalate to a supervisor without any success. She said the supervisor would not talk to me and they have forwarded my complaint to the "technology" department to investigate.

I checked this morning before I left and i was getting 500kbps.

It takes me about 10-30 seconds to load each page which is outrageous.

I am about to call again so I can talk to someone in Canada.

Wish me luck and thanks for your help

  • I'm sorry to hear of your problems but happy to hear you found the answer.

Before taking them to SCC, and before cancelling, did you ask them to credit you with the overpayment for 3 years?

    =aw

  • Personally I can't complain. I am getting four times the speed I am paying for

  • My mom had this issue a couple years ago, and even though she was paying for high speed, it was the lower speed service she was actually getting. They made an adjustment to her account and upgraded her service.

  • I finally talked to someone who knows something. My line has been capped at 550kbps and my max line capacity is 1mbps. Even thought I am paying for a 3mbps service. They have been ripping me off for 3 years. I should have been on a basic service since my line could never handle the high speed anyway. Needless to say I cancelled all of my Bell Canada service and am switching to rogers. I am also going to take them to small claims court for the $466.20 extra I paid for a service I could not get.

    Thanks

I was in the same situation as you were. This was back in 2005.
When I found out that they misrepresented the max BW I was supposed to have and was paying for, I cancelled my service on the spot and went with a cableco.

  • You can't rely on this test to see what your constant speed is.

The speed that Bell Sympatico, and any provider offers, changes from day to day.

If your speed does not improve after a couple of days and you are sure it's not with any maintenance issues from your end, call Sympatico and have them check your sub-station (they will tell you if there are any slowdowns in your area).

  • BTW, if you click on "Compare to Others" after running the test, it reports that "My ISP (Ontario) avg" is 2528 kb/s.
